All the multivolume novels with their sad and amusing intricacies, all the edifying and meditative, scholarly and unscholarly Bible commentaries — and novels and books of edification are the two staples of English literature — all these you may with an easy conscience leave unread. Perhaps you will find some books on geology, economics, history or mathematics which contain a small grain of novelty — however these are matters which one studies, but does not read , they represent dry, specialised branches of science, arid botanising, plants whose roots were long ago torn out of the general soil of humanity from which they derived their nourishment.
Past and Present is a book by Thomas Carlyle. It combines medieval history with criticism of 19th-century British society. Carlyle wrote it in seven weeks as a respite from the harassing labor of writing Cromwell. He was inspired by the recently published Chronicles of the Abbey of Saint Edmund's Bury , which had been written by Jocelin of Brakelond at the close of the 12th century. This account of a medieval monastery had taken Carlyle's fancy, and he drew upon it in order to contrast the monks' reverence for work and heroism with the sham leadership of his own day.

The social order is impossible without religion because justice and honesty of an individual do not arise from socio-economic order but from religion. Insincere, lazy and canting aristocrats have no earnestness about them at all. THEME: Men are wrong in claiming to be happy, that is not their destiny; they can only claim the blessedness of work. In their unconsciousness lies their strength. Wealth is accumulated in few hands.

Past and Present does not simply analyze the condition of England, it represents that condition by depicting the various factions that make up English society in much the same way that The French Revolution had dramatized the voices of conflicting factions. Through dialogue between the prophetic author and the factions dividing English society, Carlyle imagines the conversion of his contemporaries and the emergence of a new era.
