In the previous session you learned about nutrition, nutrients, food and food choices. In this session, you will learn about each nutrient in more detail. You will learn about the major categories of nutrients, the main sources of these, their function, and how our body uses each of these nutrients for healthy growth and development.

While there are many essential nutrients, they can be broken into two categories: macronutrients and micronutrients. Macronutrients are eaten in large amounts and include the primary building blocks of your diet — protein, carbohydrates, and fat — which provide your body with energy. Vitamins and minerals are micronutrients, and small doses go a long way. There are six main groups of essential micronutrients and macronutrients.

6 Essential Nutrients and Why Your Body Needs Them

There are six essential nutrients that people need to consume through dietary sources to maintain optimal health. The WHO divide these essential nutrients into two categories: micronutrients and macronutrients. Micronutrients are nutrients that a person needs in small doses. Micronutrients consist of vitamins and minerals. Although the body only needs small amounts of them, a deficiency can cause ill health.

We are what we eat. That is why it is important to eat healthily, and lucky for us, science can help us with this. Did you know that the food that we eat can be divided into groups based on the nutritional properties they offer? Read on to find out how many classes of food exist, their functions, and sources. The vast number of dishes today create different food classes that are very difficult to organize. However, it is possible to classify them. The science of dietology develops every day, and its data can be used to figure out what we eat and why.

There are seven major classes of nutrients: 1. Carbohydrates 2. Fats 3. Dietary Fiber 4. Minerals 5. Proteins 6.

THE FOOD GROUPS

Although each of the 7 major groups of nutrients performs different and unique functions in our body, they are all essential because they work together and contribute to our good health. The main functions of these major nutrients can be summarized as below:. Carbohydrates are a major source of energy of our body, and they come mainly from grains, such as rice and noodles. Besides, fruit, root vegetables, dry beans and dairy products also contain carbohydrates. Meat, fish, seafood, eggs, dairy products, dry beans and bean products are good sources of protein.

Classes of food with examples and functions

During our last lesson, we talked about eating whole foods. One of the most important parts of healthy living is balancing eating different kinds of whole foods and limiting your intake of processed foods so that you get all of the nutrients that your body needs. The Food Pyramid is a tool that explains exactly what you need to eat in order to get the right amount of nutrients. There are six categories in the Food Pyramid: the bread, cereal, rice, and pasta group grains , the fruit group, the vegetable group, the meat, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs, and nuts group protein , the milk, yogurt, and cheese group dairy , and the fats, oils, and sweets group. The size of each category on the pyramid corresponds with the amount of food, or number of servings, that we need to eat every day.

There are six classes of essential nutrients necessary for human survival: carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins, minerals and water. The best way to get these nutrients is by following a varied, healthy diet featuring plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grains, lean proteins, nonfat dairy products and healthy fats. Dietary requirements vary with age and sex.

The food groups are divided based on the nutritional properties they offer. Foods that animals eat can be classified based on the amount of nutrients and the type of nutrients they provide for subsistence and survival. It is highly recommended to eat portions of food from the different groups in order to live a healthy lifestyle.
