They are essential reading for anyone interested in the extraordinary impact Chomsky has had on philosophy.

A disgraceful career

He is among the ten most cited authors in the humanities—trailing only Marx, Lenin, Shakespeare, the Bible, Aristotle, Plato, and Freud—and the only living member of the top ten. Were it not for this status, many of his obsessive and outlandish political ideas would by now have disqualified him from reasoned debate. The most devastating articles in the Anti-Chomsky Reader are not those that expose the ideological prejudices, factual misrepresentations, and distorted logic of his political writings but the two at the end of the book that tear up his reputation as one of the towering intellects of our time. His reputation turns out not to have been earned by any significant contribution to human understanding but to be the product of a combination of self-promotion, abuse of detractors, and the fudging of his findings. But in linguistics, Williamson shows, the results are comparatively trivial. Moreover, Chomsky has not established a grand new paradigm for his field, and then spent the rest of his life building upon its foundations and encouraging other researchers to do the same, as would have happened had his project been genuinely important.

Why Chimpanzees Can't Learn Language and Only Humans Can

Chomsky is as controversial as he is influential. Admirers see him as a courageous teller of unpleasant truths about political power and those who wield it in the United States. Critics view him as a propagandist and ideologue who sees only black and white where there are multiple shades of gray. While Chomsky's fans tend to view him uncritically, his critics often don't take him seriously. Unlike any previous work, this book takes Chomsky seriously while treating him critically. The author gives Chomsky credit for valuable contributions to our understanding of the contemporary political world, but spares no criticism of the serious deficiencies he sees in Chomsky's political analyses.

Also lists misquotations, numbers games and worthless sources used in his writings. Chomsky wrote that Americans were no better than Nazis. Then he misrepresented what he had written. Chomsky wants to abolish the liberal state because it exercises too little control over the population. An academic colleague exposes his manipulative rhetoric about international human rights standards.

Humans are storytelling beings. As far as we know, no other species has the capacity for language and ability to use it in endlessly creative ways. From our earliest days, we name and describe things. For people immersed in the study of language and the study of learning, one really important question has engendered a lot of debate over the years: How much of this ability is innate — part of our genetic makeup — and how much do we learn from our environments? But is there an inherited ability underlying our individual languages — a structural framework that enables us to grasp, retain, and develop language so easily? Whether we learn Arabic, English, Chinese, or sign language is determined, of course, by the circumstances of our lives. Chomsky and other linguists have said that all languages contain similar elements.
