Applying Piaget’s Stages of Development in the Classroom

He died in Geneva on September 16, He was the oldest child of Arthur Piaget, professor of medieval literature at the University, and of Rebecca Jackson. This short paper is generally considered as the start of a brilliant scientific career made of over sixty books and several hundred articles. Piaget has been labeled an interactionist as well as a constructivist. His interest in cognitive development came from his training in the natural sciences and his interest in epistemology.

Jean Piaget - Intellectual Development

Jean Piaget 's theory of cognitive development is well-known within the fields of psychology and education, but it has also been the subject of considerable criticism. While presented in a series of discrete, progressive stages, even Piaget believed that development does not always follow such a smooth and predictable path. In spite of the criticism, the theory has had a considerable impact on our understanding of child development. Piaget's observation that kids actually think differently than adults helped usher in a new era of research on the mental development of children. Piaget's focus on qualitative development had an important impact on education. While Piaget did not specifically apply his theory in this way, many educational programs are now built upon the belief that children should be taught at the level for which they are developmentally prepared. In addition to this, a number of instructional strategies have been derived from Piaget's work.

What Are Piaget’s Stages of Development and How Are They Used?

Topics in Cognitive Development pp Cite as. All development is hierarchical, that is, we must all go through the same stages in the same sequence, moving from the simple to the complex. Early learning is slower than later learning, although the rate at which we progress through a given stage is a function of an interaction between our environment and our genetic endowment.

Cognition refers to thinking and memory processes, and cognitive development refers to long-term changes in these processes. One of the most widely known perspectives about cognitive development is the cognitive stage theory of a Swiss psychologist named Jean Piaget. Piaget created and studied an account of how children and youth gradually become able to think logically and scientifically.

Jean Piaget proposed four stages of cognitive development. These stages help teachers assess and best serve students in the classroom. That is, if we can discern that a student is significantly over or under-developed with regard to their particular phase of development, we can seek out support for that child. We can also work with children who are in a transitional phase from one stage to the next. When we understand what their next stage is supposed to entail, we can help them master those skills or abilities.

The legacy of Jean Piaget to the world of early childhood education is that he fundamentally altered the view of how a child learns. And a teacher, he believed, was more than a transmitter of knowledge she was also an essential observer and guide to helping children build their own knowledge.
