Living Streets is pleased to see Birmingham City Council taking steps towards addressing its poor air quality with the planned imposition by of a new Clean Air Zone. Now, with the council's proposals open to consultation, we are encouraging people to have their say so the plan not only gets the backing it needs to become reality, but is also fit for purpose. Poor air quality currently contributes to deaths across Birmingham each year. The city needs dramatic change to make it a safe place to live, particularly for its most vulnerable residents — children and the elderly. Respond to birmingham council's consultation. The proposed CAZ, which you can see in the map above, will see the most polluting diesel vehicles charged to enter the area within the A ring road, Birmingham Middleway.

Underground Railroad (UGRR)
Cyclists with slick road-bikes should be aware of the few unsurfaced sections which can be rutted and muddy and unsuitable for 'skinny tyres'; cyclists can either push their bikes along these sections or follow an on-road alternative. Click here for information. The Chilterns Hills are by definition hilly!! The route is undulating with some steep climbs and descents in places. This, combined with the fact that there are a few busy sections of road along the route, makes it unsuitable for novices. Cyclists will need a reasonable level of fitness and experience of cycling on roads with traffic.

Birmingham's much anticipated Rotary Trail opened April At its entrance, the trail features a foot-tall sign which reads: "Rotary Trail in the Magic City. Although only a half mile, the trail, stretching from 20th Street to 24th Street, links two of the city's unique attractions. Near its western end, the acre Railroad Park offers a rail-trail , skate park, playground, and overlooks for trainspotting and viewing the city's skyline. Near the east end of the Rotary Trail is a National Historic Landmark, the Sloss Furnaces, which serviced the city's iron-producing industry for nearly a century. At 25th street, one block from the trail's eastern terminus, travelers can pick up the Jones Valley Trail , which continues along 1st Avenue to 32nd Street.

Facing the entrance to the Ikon, turn left to head towards Central Square of Brindley Place where the Costa Coffee pavilion is located. Head over to the right hand side of the coffee shop towards Sealife Centre and take the passageway to the left of the Sealife centre towards the Birmingham Indoor Arena. Turn left along the canal, then take the bridge over the canal to the other side, then turn right at the end of the bridge to head down the ramp onto the canal towpath.
There are a number of commuter cycle routes to Birmingham University that avoid the busiest of roads for at least part of the way. The canal, like all canls in the city, had its towpath resurfaced in and its now good qulity though a tad narrow for the volume of cyclists. A brochure PDF for this route is available.
