Thucydides has been dubbed the father of " scientific history " by those who accept his claims to have applied strict standards of impartiality and evidence-gathering and analysis of cause and effect, without reference to intervention by the deities, as outlined in his introduction to his work. He also has been called the father of the school of political realism , which views the political behavior of individuals and the subsequent outcomes of relations between states as ultimately mediated by, and constructed upon, the emotions of fear and self-interest. More generally, Thucydides developed an understanding of human nature to explain behaviour in such crises as plagues , massacres , and civil war.

This paper makes two main arguments about the relationship between Thucydides, modern realism, and the key conceptual ideas they introduce to situate and explain international politics. First, Thucydides refutes the central claim underlying modern realist scholarship, that the sources of state behavior can be located not in the character of the primary political units but in the decentralized system or structure created by their interaction. Many scholars are therefore incorrect to assume that demonstrating the importance of non-structural factors in The Peloponnesian War severs the connection between Thucydides and structural realism. Thucydides may in fact be a realist, but not for reasons conventionally assumed. Most users should sign in with their email address. Yet by expounding politics itself in terms of rest and motion, he does not so much distinguish it from the natural realm as assimilate the two. Both understandings prove problematic, and the dialogue that Thucydides stages between them may point toward the enigmatic perspective of Thucydides himself. Keywords: pre-Socratic , Empedocles , nature , justice , piety , rest , motion. I stressed the centrality of the regime for him and his dialectical not merely antithetical presentation of opposing viewpoints. In these respects, I argued, he anticipated crucial teachings ascribed to Socrates and explored by his admirers.

Thucydides, as he himself tells us, was an Athenian and lived during the period of the Peloponnesian War, though, from the unfinished state of his work, he probably died before it came to an end. Believing in the early stages of the war that it would be one of the most important wars in Greek history, he collected his materials and began the early drafts of his history soon after the war began. The first book is his study of events leading to the war and represents the earliest surviving account of the building of the Athenian empire. The subsequent books narrate the course of the war itself. The electronic text version of this translation comes from the Eris Project at Virginia Tech, which has made it available for public use.

Thucydides in these pages seems to be exploring democratic persuasion in crisis at Athens. There is not much to cheer about here, but as in the case of Aristophanes' Knights , how are we to take these critiques? Rhetoric and sophistic.

Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War is considered in history and political science as a text of fundamental disciplinary relevance. However, neither discipline takes the other discipline into account during debates about Thucydides. Following Thucydides and Political Order: Concepts of Order and the History of the Peloponnesian War, this collection features scholarly work that asks what political order Thucydides envisioned, against which he might have judged the events he described. The contributors explore the role that Thucydides plays as a model theorist or representative of an ideal political order in philosophical traditions and schools of thought. Christian R. First, it will describe human nature and human convention in the polis and their binary relationships with power and justice, respectively. Second, it will show that without conventions such as justice; human nature and unchecked power drive civilization into anarchy. Finally, the essay will demonstrate that without concertedly applying the convention of justice in the international sphere, civilization will continue to lapse into chaos throughout human history. He therefore believes that human nature is forever cruel and unjust. Explained similarly to the Hobbesian approach, without restraints, human nature will pursue whatever means necessary for self-interest and greed.
