Alfred Gell author eBook 09 Jul Alfred Gell puts forward a new anthropological theory of visual art, seen as a form of instrumental action: the making of things as a means of influencing the thoughts and actions of others. He argues that existing anthropological and aesthetic theories take an overwhelmingly passive point of view, and questions the criteria that accord art status only to a certain class of objects and not to others. The anthropology of art is here reformulated as the anthropology of a category ofaction: Gell shows how art objects embody complex intentionalities and mediate social agency. He explores the psychology of patterns and perceptions, art and personhood, the control of knowledge, and the interpretation of meaning, drawing upon a diversity of artistic traditions--European, Indian,Polynesian, Melanesian, and Australian.
Gell taught at the London School of Economics, among other places. He was also a Fellow of the British Academy. He died of cancer in , at the age of In his book Art and Agency , Gell formulated an influential theory of art based on abductive reasoning. Gell argues that ' art in general although his attention focuses on visual artifacts, like the prows of the boats of the Trobriand islands acts on its users, i. Art can enchant the viewer, who is always a blind viewer, because "the technology of enchantment is founded on the enchantment of technology" the title of a previous essay on aesthetics by Gell is The Technology of Enchantment and the Enchantment of Technology ,

As I discuss in following pages more extensively, the particular type of male bias in they had to engage with and somewhat write against was also loaded with colonial undertones.
