Since classical times, writers have commented on the variability of climate and the resulting consequences for human affairs. Sometimes the variations have offered advantages to humans but, more often, the historical record tells of unforeseen climate-related disasters such as famine, flood, or disease, as documented by H. Lamb

Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences NHESS is a not-for-profit interdisciplinary and international journal dedicated to the public discussion and open-access publication of high-quality studies and original research on natural hazards and their consequences.

Embracing a holistic Earth system science approach, NHESS serves a wide and diverse community of research scientists, practitioners, and decision makers concerned with detection of natural hazards, monitoring and modelling, vulnerability and risk assessment, and the design and implementation of mitigation and adaptation strategies, including economical, societal, and educational aspects.

NHESS also publishes solicited book reviews. Papers submitted to NHESS can address different techniques and approaches including theory, modelling, experiments, case studies, and instrumentations. The journal covers the following broad subject areas, which are used to categorize the paper for review:. This list is not exhaustive or ordered by rank, and the journal will consider submissions on other subject areas. Contributions dealing with multidisciplinary aspects of natural hazards and their consequences are welcome.

Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences utilizes an innovative two-stage publication process designed to a provide a lasting record of scientific discussion on the journal topics, b maximize the effectiveness and transparency of the review process, c enable rapid publication of new scientific results and achievements, and d make scientific publications freely accessible.

The submissions are then subject to an interactive public discussion. In this discussion phase, the referees' comments anonymous or identified , additional short comments by members of the scientific community identified , as well as the authors' replies to the editor, the referees, and peers are also posted in NHESSD.

Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences also provides an effective way of publishing special issues focused on specific topics. For each special issue the individual papers are published as soon as they are available, and they are linked electronically for more information, see special issues.

Aims and scope Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences NHESS is a not-for-profit interdisciplinary and international journal dedicated to the public discussion and open-access publication of high-quality studies and original research on natural hazards and their consequences.

The following are generally considered out-of-scope or we do not encourage: Engineering topics e. Solid Earth topics that might be better suited to other Copernicus journals e. Localised case studies with no broader implications in other words, ask yourself, what would someone else in another region learn from the case study that you have done; what is the broader context?

The journal covers the following broad subject areas, which are used to categorize the paper for review: atmospheric, meteorological, and climatological hazards; sea, ocean, and coastal hazards; hydrological hazards; landslides and debris flow hazards; earthquake hazards; volcanic hazards; other hazards e.

Climatology is the study of the atmosphere and weather patterns over time. This field of science focuses on recording and analyzing weather patterns throughout the world and understanding the atmospheric conditions that cause them. It is sometimes confused with meteorology , which is the study of weather and weather forecasting. However, climatology is mainly focused on the natural and artificial forces that influence long-term weather patterns. Scientists who specialize in this field are called climatologists.

We have now learned that physical geography examines and investigates natural phenomena spatially. In the previous section, we identified some of the key elements studied by physical geographers. Combining these two items, we can now suggest that physical geography studies the spatial patterns of weather and climate, soils, vegetation, animals, water in all its forms, and landforms. Physical geography also examines the interrelationships of these phenomena to human activities. This sub-field of geography is academically known as the Human-Land Tradition. This area of geography has seen very keen interest and growth in the last few decades because of the acceleration of human induced environmental degradation. Thus, physical geography's scope is much broader than the simple spatial study of nature.

What is Climatology?

Atmospheric physics Atmospheric dynamics category. Climate category Climate change category. Climatology now includes aspects of oceanography and biogeochemistry. The main methods employed by climatologists are the analysis of observations and modelling the physical laws that determine the climate.

Climatology: its scientific nature and scope

Climatology is the scientific study of climate. Climate is defined as weather patterns that have been averaged over a given period of time to obtain a consistent pattern of the expected atmospheric conditions. Weather is the atmospheric condition of a particular place over a short period of time, normally a day.
