In addition, Basic Freud will provide a perspective and understanding of psychoanalytic theory not heretofore readily available. While this book may deepen the understanding of the seasoned therapist not trained in dynamic theory, it will be an important revelation to the newer therapists. Over the years there have been numerous introduction-to-Freud books written.

Freud and Man's Soul

Bruno Bettelheim August 28, — March 13, was an Austrian-born psychologist , scholar , public intellectual and author who spent most of his academic and clinical career in the United States. An early writer on autism , Bettelheim's work focused on the education of emotionally disturbed children, as well as Freudian psychology more generally. In the U. Bettelheim's ideas, which grew out of those of Sigmund Freud , theorized that children with behavioral and emotional disorders were not born that way, and could be treated through extended psychoanalytic therapy, treatment that rejected the use of psychotropic drugs and shock therapy. Much of his work was discredited after his death due to fraudulent academic credentials, allegations of abusive treatment of patients under his care, accusations of plagiarism , and lack of oversight by institutions and the psychological community.

Alfred A. Bettelheim says, he decided not to write a conventional memoir, but to assemble a collection of essays that might ''permit the reader to arrive at his own ideas concerning the major influences on me. The subjects addressed by this new collection - namely, the Holocaust, Freudian theory and early childhood development - will come as no surprise to followers of Mr. Bettelheim's work; the book's individual essays, in fact, represent amplifications and variations on the themes already addressed by ''The Informed Heart,'' ''The Uses of Enchantment,'' ''Surviving'' and ''Freud and Man's Soul. Bettelheim reiterates his belief in children's need for aggressive fantasies; his conviction that all people, young and old, ''must live by fictions - not just to find meaning in life but to make it bearable,'' and his highly controversial view that many of the Jews who died in Nazi concentration camps exhibited a form of ''suicidal behavior. By far the most engaging pieces in ''Freud's Vienna and Other Essays'' are the more personal ones, dealing with Mr. Bettelheim's childhood in Vienna, his work with autistic children and his studies in psychoanalysis.

I find Bettelheim difficult to read simply because he says everything and there is nothing to be said that one could be certain has not been said by him. But one must read him because he can be exactly right, or more nearly right than other writers. Winnicott 1. In the public's mind, Bettelheim's work on childhood psychological problems, personality development , education of children, and therapeutic techniques, although often controversial, was highly respected, even celebrated.

Educating the Emotions
