The surrounding wonderful water world is inhabited by star-born fish, a musical moon, a squeamish seahorse, and three wee fishermen, all entwined with the roll of the sea across shimmering pastel skies. The child reader is also aboard, appearing in the billowing spinnaker sail as the sabot is sped on by the antics of the wind. Wynken, Blynken and Nod
The original title was "Dutch Lullaby". The poem is a fantasy bed-time story about three children sailing and fishing among the stars from a boat which is a wooden shoe. The names suggest a sleepy child's blinking eyes and nodding head. The spelling of the names, and the "wooden shoe," suggest Dutch language and names, as hinted in the original title. By , the lyrics had been set to music, by American pianist and composer Ethelbert Woodbridge Nevin. David Gude performed the song on his Vanguard album New Folks. Donovan wrote and sang a musical setting on his children's album H.
It was probably the first poem I read for myself, tempted by some bold, cartoony illustrations. I don't remember much about them, except for a giant clog which served as the fishing-boat. But no one who ever read the poem could fail to recall the names of those "fishermen three". Wynken, Blynken and Nod are slightly foreign, yet familiar, and immensely satisfying sounds.
