Infection and Immunity is a peer-reviewed medical journal published by the American Society for Microbiology. It focuses on interactions between bacterial, fungal, or parasitic pathogens and their hosts. Areas covered include molecular pathogenesis , cellular microbiology , bacterial infection , host responses and inflammation , fungal and parasitic infections, microbial immunity and vaccines , and molecular genomics.

The journal publishes primary research articles, editorials , commentaries, minireviews, and a spotlight report highlighting articles of particular interest selected by the editors. Articles are freely accessible after 6 months delayed open access. Through its "Global Outreach Program," free online access is available to qualified microbiologists in eligible developing countries.

The journal was established in Prior to that time, original research articles covering topics in infection and immunity were published in a section of the Journal of Bacteriology. As the size of this section grew, the need for a separate journal publishing peer-reviewed research in this area became apparent.

According to the Journal Citation Reports , the journal has a impact factor of 3. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Academic journal.

Then sequence the steps in the process on your own. Maurice Hilleman isolated the mumps virus from his daughter Jeryl Lynn while she was ill. Listen to Hilleman talk about developing a mumps vaccine. Plasma cells produce antibodies that can neutralize pathogens. The College of Physicians of Philadelphia.

The primary function of the immune system is to defend the body from pathogens , which are disease-causing organisms such as viruses and bacteria. Tissues, cells, and proteins in the immune system work together to achieve this function. To fight infections, the immune system must be able to identify pathogens. Pathogens have molecules called antigens on their surface. When a pathogen gets into the body, the immune system reacts in 2 ways. The innate immune response is a rapid reaction.

The course will give students an introduction to basic immune mechanisms and emphasizes the basic principles of immunology, including the cells and molecules that make up the innate and adaptive immune system. This first part will show how the immune system integrates a wide variety of different mechanisms to defend against the threats of multiple pathogens. The second part of the course deals with how the immune system operates in a variety of disease situations and seeks to reinforce basic immunological principles. Many modern drugs exploit antibodies or immune cells and by examining their production we will show how the immune response can be exploited to provide valuable tools for the treatment of disease and scientific research. The module aims to give students an introduction to basic immune mechanisms and is highly recommended for students intending to study immunology further e.

Beyond structural and chemical barriers to pathogens, the immune system has two fundamental lines of defense: innate immunity and adaptive immunity. Innate immunity is the first immunological mechanism for fighting against an intruding pathogen. It is a rapid immune response, initiated within minutes or hours after aggression, that has no immunologic memory. Adaptive immunity, on the other hand, is antigen-dependent and antigen-specific; it has the capacity for memory, which enables the host to mount a more rapid and efficient immune response upon subsequent exposure to the antigen.
