The Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost

Eye of the Needle

The rich man claimed to have followed all the law, and perhaps he did. Sunday's Gospel tells us Jesus loves him and (one imagines a soft smile), says, "Yes, but one thing." The Thing. The imagery of the eye of the needle, the narrow gate, would be familiar to the man. Opposing forces were slowed to single file and small armament as they attempted to enter. Those with more baggage -- of any type -- would be compelled to set it down outside, and decide what was important enough to carry with them. The rich man could not set down all his accumulations to join the community. What would you be willing to set aside? [Photo under CC license.]
