March 18: The Fifth Sunday in Lent

Alabaster Jar

 

This 6th c. Canaanite alabaster jar (or so advertised) of about 4" tall, is worth $350-400.

Sunday's Service Schedule
  • 8:00 a.m. - Holy Eucharist, Rite I, in the church
  • 10:30 a.m. - Holy Eucharist, Rite II, in the church
  • 5:00 p.m. - Holy Eucharist, Rite II, in the Chapel of the Twelve Apostles.
Sunday Education & Events

Nursery: Our professionally-staffed nursery is open Sundays between 8:45 a.m. and noon for infants of six-weeks to children four years old as parents desire and are in worship and fellowship. The nursery is located directly off the Parish Hall foyer. Your infants and young children are always welcome in church.

 

No Children's Classes or Children's Church Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday.

 

Adult classes at 9:15 a.m.:

  • “A Dose of Daily Scripture: Reflection and Discussion of the Sunday Readings,” with Fr. Howe and lay leaders is taking a spring break, this Sunday, March 25 and Easter Sunday, April 1.

  • Fr. Joe Reynolds will continues his series on The Four Gospels, delving into Matthew this Sunday, at 9:15 a.m. in the CSF Atrium on the third floor of the Ministries Center. His class will have a break on Sunday, April 1 and Sunday, April 8.

Youth Confirmation Class will meet this Sunday, March 25 at 2:00 p.m. (note change of time). Gather in the Ministries Center foyer.

 

Adult Confirmation - Reception - Joining the Episcopal Church

 

Last Call: The bishop will be coming to St. James on Sunday, May 6. If you are already an Episcopalian, all you have to do is let the church office know, and we will request your "letter of transfer" from the parish you once attended. If you are not an Episcopalian yet, and would like to join St. James and the Episcopal Church, Father Howe will be conducting informal classes about our church. If interested, please call Father Howe at the church office; 225-421-3539 is his direct line, or 225-387-5141 ext. 1225. Please do this within the week, so we can send you details.

Day School Outreach Online Giving

 

Bishop Morris K. Thompson, Jr. leads the diocesan involvement in the March for Our Lives national event, OPEN TO ALL AGES, and invites those marching with him to wear purple.

  • Gathering - Noon - Youth Room & Activities Room in the Ministries Center will open for poster-making and gathering space. Light breakfast snacks provided.
  • Prayer - 1:00 p.m. - Prayer service in the church, led by Bishop Morris K. Thompson, Jr.
  • March - 1:30-4:30 p.m. - Scheduled march time (pick-up by 5:00 p.m.)

 

Meditative Yoga will be held on Wednesday morning, March 28, at 9:30 in the CSF Atrium on the third floor of the Ministries Center. Margaret Culbertson leads these sessions in gentle, widely accessible poses. R.s.v.p. to Margaret by noon on the previous Tuesday, if you plan to attend, so proper arrangements can be made.

 

S.M.I.L.E. (Senior Men Into Life's Enjoyment) Bible study is in the library on the second floor of the Ministries Center at 11:00 a.m. each Wednesday.

 

Holy Eucharist with healing prayers is celebrated each Wednesday at noon in the Chapel of the Twelve Apostles. This simple service lasts about 35 minutes.

 

The Triduum Begins: Maundy Thursday at 7:00 p.m.

 

Altar of Repose Sign-up

 

Immediately following the 7:00 p.m. Maundy Thursday service on March 29, at about 8:00 p.m., the reserved Sacrament will be processed to the Altar of Repose in the Chapel of the Twelve Apostles where a vigil will be kept until the first Good Friday service at 7:30 a.m. on March 30.

 

Volunteers are needed to help prepare the altar at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday, March 29, and to clean-up at about 11:30 a.m. on Good Friday, March 30 (just before the noon walk through the Stations of the Cross).

 

You are invited to sign-up to help, or for a particular hour’s watch with coordinator Nancy Jo Poirrier, or click the image, above, to sign up directly on our spreadsheet. You are, of course, welcome to come without signing up at any time during the night. Meditation sheets will be available, or bring your own physical or spiritual list. Security officers will be present throughout the night.

Email the Children's Council
Bring Easter Hunt Items this Sunday!
 

The Children’s Council is helping out the Easter bunny, collecting treat-filled plastic Easter eggs for this year’s Easter Egg Hunt. The Hunt is on Saturday, March 31 at 4:00 p.m. at the home of Susanna McCarthy, 1465 Steele Blvd.

 

Please consider donating to the bunny’s collection to hide, particularly if you think you might have a child or grandchild participate. A collection box will be in the Parish Hall Parlor through Palm Sunday where you can drop off plastic eggs of any color, and small trinkets (stickers, bouncy balls, erasers, or individually wrapped candy) for filling the eggs.

  • Thursday, March 29 - Maundy Thursday Overnight Lock-in - We'll attend the 7:00 p.m. Maundy Thursday service together, then walk to a downtown restaurant for dinner. We will enjoy a lock-in of games, fun, and activities, including prayer shifts at the Altar of Repose throughout the night. Youth need to bring sleeping bags & pillows, and snack to share. Parents pick-up by 9:00 a.m. on Good Friday. Chaperones needed!

Junior High: June 11-15 -Texas: Youth rising to sixth through eighth grades (and their friends!) are invited to join Christ Church/Covington as we travel to Quest Ranch in the Texas hill country to assist in flood relief efforts, visit Canyon Lake, and Schiltterbahn Waterpark! Cost: $250* includes all food, lodging, transportation, & activities *Scholarships available, please contact Annie Jung. $75 non-refundable deposit to reserve your spot due April 1, with balance due three weeks before trip.

 

Senior High: July 8-15 - Tennessee: Rising ninth graders through finishing seniors (and their friends!), and youth from Grace Church/St. Francisville, will pair with Team Effort Mission Camp in Copperhill, Tennessee in light construction and home repair in an economically-depressed area. When the work is done, we'll enjoy whitewater rafting and ropes courses! Cost: $400* includes all food, lodging, transportation, & activities *Scholarships available, please contact Annie Jung. $75 non-refundable deposit to reserve your spot due April 1, with balance due three weeks before trip.

Search Committee Update

The Search Committee has narrowed the candidate applicants to a group of finalists. We are excited about moving into this next stage of the process. Calls are being made to the candidates' references, and visits to personally interview the candidates in their home parishes will follow as appropriate. Please continue to keep the committee in your prayers.
