A young John Bridges (1818-1854) painted Christ Healing the Mother of Simon Peter's Wife in 1839. Bridges larger repetoire consists largely of portraits, particularly of English college deans. The painting is exhibited at the Birmingham (AL) Museum of Art. Click the image for a larger view.

Sunday's Service Schedule
  • 8:00 a.m. - Holy Eucharist, Rite I, in the church with voting on Vestry and Associate Vestry candidates
  • 9:15 a.m. - Christian Education classes for all ages. Read more.
  • 10:30 a.m. - Holy Eucharist, Rite II, in the church with voting on Vestry and Associate Vestry candidates
  • 5:00 p.m. - Holy Eucharist, Rite II, in the Chapel of the Twelve Apostles.

The Search Committee is still accepting parishioner nominations for candidates to be considered for the position of rector of St. James Episcopal Church. Sunday Education & Events

Nursery: Our professionally-staffed nursery is open Sundays between 8:45 a.m. and noon for infants of six-weeks to children four years old as parents desire and are in worship and fellowship. The nursery is located directly off the Parish Hall foyer. Your infants and young children are always welcome in church.

 

CHILDREN:

  • Children's Sunday School at 9:15 a.m. and Children's Church (during the 10:30 services) - Children gather on the second floor of the Parish Hall for Sunday School at 9:15 a.m., and at the back of the church during the sequence hymn (just before the Gospel reading) for a brief lesson and activity in Children's Church, before returning to their families in time for communion.

 

YOUTH:

  • Young people in grades six through twelve gather in the Youth Room on the first floor of the Ministries Center at 9:15 a.m. LAST CALL: Flamingo Flockings and Spanish Town Parking Passes for sale in the Parish Hall before and after the morning services!

 

ADULT classes at 9:15 Sunday mornings:

  • “A Dose of Daily Scripture: Reflection and Discussion of the Sunday Readings,” gathers in the reception area of the Kids' Orchestra offices on the third floor of the Ministries Center with the Rev. John M. Pitzer and the Rev. Ralph F. Howe Jr., and lay leaders, to read and discuss the Sunday readings from the lectionary.

  • Fr. Joe Reynolds continues his series, Pure Grace: The Application of 12-Step Principles to Life, based on his own manuscript, in the CSF Atrium on the third floor of the Ministries Center.

Church Calendar Link

The Day School hosts Grandparents Day today, with a special musical and art presentation for their guests. There is no celebration of Eucharist, this morning. The Day School leads a modified version of Morning Prayer on Monday mornings at 8:15 a.m., in the church. Day School families and parishioners are welcome.

 

Open meetings of AA are held weekdays at noon in the Activities Room on the first floor of the Ministries Center.

 

S.M.I.L.E. (Senior Men Into Life's Enjoyment) Bible study is in the library on the second floor of the Ministries Center at 11:00 a.m. each Wednesday.

 

Wednesdays at noon: A service of Holy Eucharist with opportunity for healing prayers is held each week in the Chapel of the Twelve Apostles. This quiet, mid-week service lasts about thirty minutes.

 

The Bad Girls Book Club February meeting will be on Monday, February 12 and the selection is Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf. We meet at La Madeleine's on Jefferson at Old Hammond Hwy. Let Monica Murphy know you'll be attending via email, or text to 225-335-3572.

The Joan of Arc Study Group is focusing on the Apostles of Jesus in this year's meetings.

 

Weezie Mullenix hosts the noon gathering on Wednesday, February 7, and Judy Foil will present the lesson.

The Center for Spiritual Formation, with Fr. John Pitzer and Mary Boutwell, have recruited parishioner volunteers to offer reflections on the daily Gospel reading during Lent, beginning on Ash Wednesday, February 14 and going through Easter week.

Sentell grandbaby

 

Congratulations!

 

Lucy James Sentell made a dramatic entrance on January 26, 2018, in Baton Rouge, weighing 7 lbs., 4 oz. Her parents are Ginny and John Allen Sentell -- and of course the dee-lighted St. James grandmother is Mary Sentell. Cheryl & Jim Rabb, Lynn and Warren Rabb, and Theresa Beaugh round out her grandparents and great-grandparents.

 

Hannah's Highlights

THIS Sunday afternoon, 4:00-6:00 p.m., EYC for grades 9-12, in the EYC room on the first floor of the Ministries Center. Bring a friend!
