Sunday Education and Events


Nursery: Our professionally-staffed nursery is open Sundays between 8:45 a.m. and noon for infants of six-weeks to children four years old as parents desire and are in worship, fellowship, or education time. The nursery is located right off the Parish Hall foyer. Your infants and young children are always welcome in church.



  • Children's Sunday School at 9:15 a.m. and Children's Church (during the 10:30 services) are back! Children gather on the second floor of the Parish Hall for Sunday School at 9:15 a.m., and at the back of the church during the sequence hymn (just before the Gospel reading) for a brief lesson and activity in Children's Church, before returning to their families in time for communion.



  • Young people in grades six through twelve gather in the Youth Room on the first floor of the Ministries Center at 9:15 a.m.

  • Youth confirmation series returns next Sunday, March 19 at 9:15 a.m. in the Activities Room on the first floor of the Ministries Center. Contact Hannah Rothermel for more information.


ADULT classes at 9:15 Sunday mornings:

  • "A Dose of Daily Scripture: Reflection and Discussion of the Sunday Readings," gathers in the reception area of the diocesan offices on the third floor of the Ministries Center. The Revs. Ralph F. Howe, Jr., and John M. Pitzer, as well as lay leaders, including Annie Knazs Jung and Ed Henderson, read and discuss the Sunday readings from the lectionary.

  • The Episcopal Church with the Very Rev. Joe Reynolds, continues at 9:15 a.m. this Sunday, in the CSF Atrium on the third floor of the Ministries Center. Videos of his presentations are available on our website, here.

Adult Classes Spring 2017



Centering Prayer returns this Sunday, March 12. During Lent, Centering Prayer will begin at 5:45 p.m. with a few minutes of introduction and practice of Centering Prayer for those new, needing a refresher, and/or interested in further information. The sessions will conclude at 6:30 p.m. Centering Prayer is held in the Chapel of the Holy Presence on the third floor of the Ministries Center.

Open meetings of AA are held daily at noon in the Activities Room on the first floor of the Ministries Center.


Morning Prayer with the Day School is Monday at 8:15 a.m., and Holy Eucharist with the Day School is held on Fridays at 8:10 a.m.


Meditative Yoga: Carmen Board leads sessions on the first and second Mondays, 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the CSF Atrium on the third floor of the Ministries Center. Margaret Culbertson leads sessions on the third and fourth Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. The relaxed styles used by Margaret and Carmen are accessible to almost anyone, and everyone is invited to attend.


Cookies will be here, Sunday! The St. James Episcopal Day School Brownie troop will have Girl Scout Cookies for sale in the Parish Hall before and after the mid-morning services this Sunday, March 12. (Remember: Sundays are in Lent, but not of Lent!)


EfM Grads: A special meeting at noon on Thursday, March 16 in the CSF Atrium on the third floor of the Ministries Center. Contact Nancy Jo Poirrier for more information.


Bad Girls Book Club: We're reading Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult, and meeting Monday, March 20 at 6:00 p.m. at Le Madeleine's on Jefferson Highway. R.s.v.p. to Monica Murphy or text 225-335-3572, and don't forget to bring a sweater!

Glory & Gumbo - The Rev. John Moloney Preaching Series at 12:05 p.m. in the church, is timed just right for you to enjoy Gumbo lunch, first, in Bishops Hall, then enjoy the brief (25") period of music and speaker in the church -- or, begin with the word and music, and still have plenty of time to enjoy Gumbo before serving ends at 1:00 p.m.
Hannah's Highlights
  • Sunday School classes this Sunday, March 12, at 9:15 a.m. for sixth through twelfth graders -- the EYC age group -- in the Youth Room on the first floor of the Ministries Center.

  • GLOW-IN-THE-DARK KICKBALL has been rescheduled to Saturday, March 18 due to the weather/parade schedule rearrangement last weekend. Third-fifth graders are invited! Saturday, March 18 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. on the Day School playground. Wear dark colors and meet on the first floor of the Ministries Center. (Come fed; only snacks provided!)

  • MISSION TRIP PLANS - St. James will join St. Luke's on their 10th anniversary trip to CUSE (Cathedral Urban Service Experience) at Christ Church Cathedral in Houston in two trips: (1) May 31-June 3 for those currently in grades 6-8; and (2) June 27-July 1 for those currently in grades nine-12. MISSION TRIP MEETING on Sunday, March 19 after 10:30 services in the Parish Hall small parlor.

  • March 22, 6:00-7:30 p.m., for first-12th graders, in the youth room, first floor of Ministries Center, we will be having a hangout night which will include games and dessert.

  • March 25, 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. - The LOT Project - Third through fifth graders included! We will meet at St. James at 8:00 a.m. and travel to New Sunlight Baptist Church located near North Blvd and 18th Street to serve breakfast, done by 10:30 a.m. We need 10 volunteers to help cook in the kitchen, serve the food, take prayer requests, pray with folks, visit with folks, clean up, and anything else that comes up that needs doing. We are collecting hygiene items to give out after breakfast is served. Please drop them off in the designated boxes in the youth room or in Hannah's office.

  • Graduate Recognition will be held on Sunday, April 2 at the 10:30 service, with a reception, afterwards. Bios to share in the parish newsletter are due April 14. You can send your photo and bio to Sylvia Rabalais.
